How an electric car aerial works

I never knew this until yesterday when I replaced the one on the Saab. I removed the case from the old unit and found this greased, flexible plastic coil. I'm guessing the motor pushes on it, uncoiling its turns into the inside of the telescopic aerial and driving it upwards. The no-name unit from Maplin being astonishingly similar to the old one, I assume this design is pretty standard.
